Bambu Lab A1 blank screen, no power, or random shutdowns: what to check and when to stop

If the light at the rear power switch is on but the screen stays black and nothing else wakes up, power is getting into the machine but not getting the mainboard running. On A1 and A1 mini printers, the most common cause we find in our own repair cases is a failure on the AC board. There are a small number of safe checks worth doing at home, and then a firm line where the machine needs to come to us. Anything to do with mains power inside the printer is on our side of that line, not yours.

Read this before anything else. If you can smell burning, see melted or deformed plastic under or behind the printer, see discolouration around any board, or see a component that has burst or fallen off, switch off at the wall, unplug the machine, and do not power it on again. Contact us. Do not try to test it "just once more" to see if it still works.
Which machines this applies to
- Main scope: Bambu Lab A1 and A1 mini. The symptoms, patterns and repair notes below are written for these printers.
- Related branch, A1 series with AMS Lite: an AMS Lite that shows no lights at all. Clearly labelled below.
Other machines and other brands can fail in similar ways, but the internal layout is different, so do not carry these steps across. If you have a different machine, get in touch and we will point you at the right process.
Symptoms we see
Completely dead or blank
- The rear switch or inlet light is on, but the screen is black, nothing moves or beeps.
- The screen backlight glows but nothing loads.
- The printer died part way through a job and will not restart, and a new power cable, another wall socket, removing the memory card and leaving it unplugged make no difference.
- No light at the rear switch at all.
Random reboots and shutdowns
- The printer resets or drops out when the heaters or motors pull hard, often early in a print.
- Messages about unstable voltage.
Heatbed temperature faults
- The bed reads zero, or reads below room temperature.
- The bed temperature falls to zero part way through a print.
- The bed heats far past its target.
- The printer trips a circuit breaker or an RCD. An RCD responds to current leaking to earth, so a trip is not by itself evidence of a bed temperature runaway. Treat it as a possible electrical fault: unplug the printer and stop testing until the printer and the supply circuit have been assessed.
Signs of a safety fault
- Melted or deformed plastic under the printer or behind the board area.
- A burnt smell, scorch marks, or a visibly failed component.
That last group is not a troubleshooting job. Unplug and contact us.
Safe owner checks
This guide is divided into three parts: safe owner checks (below), technician checks (which we would complete), and stop and contact support. Every step in this section is outside the machine. None of them require you to open a panel or touch wiring, and there are more than three of them.
- Look before you power up. With the printer unplugged, look underneath and around the base for discolouration, deformed or melted plastic, or a burnt smell. If you find any, stop here and contact us. If it is clean, carry on.
- Swap the power cable. Use another cable of the same type that you know works. Damaged cables and loose plugs are cheap to rule out.
- Swap the wall socket. Use a different socket on a different circuit if you can, straight into the wall rather than through a multi-board adaptor.
- Do a proper power cycle. Switch off, unplug for about thirty seconds, plug back in, then switch on. This clears more soft faults than a quick off and on.
- Note the rear switch light. Is it lit, dark, or flickering? Note the answer, because it changes which fault we suspect.
- Remove the memory card and try again with nothing plugged in but power.
- Record any error or code shown on screen, if the screen shows anything at all, and note whether the fault started right after a firmware update.
- Related branch, AMS Lite with no lights. Unplug the printer, then reseat the data cable at both ends, check the cable for damage or crush marks, power back up, and tell us whether any light comes on at all.
Technician checks (our bench, not yours)
These steps are listed so you know what happens next, not as instructions. They involve mains voltages and live boards, and they belong with a suitably qualified technician.
- Continuity and voltage testing of the inlet, switch, fuse circuit and power supply output.
- Bench testing the AC board, the mainboard and the toolhead board set.
- Measuring heatbed resistance and checking its temperature sensing.
- Isolating loads individually to find a short.
- Inspecting connectors and wiring for heat damage inside the machine.
Stop and contact support
Stop testing, switch off at the wall, unplug the printer, and contact us if any of the following applies: a burning smell, smoke, melted or deformed plastic, scorch marks, discolouration around a board, a burst or missing component, damaged wiring, uncontrolled heating, or a repeated circuit breaker or RCD trip. New Zealand electrical safety guidance from WorkSafe New Zealand is a good general reference for why mains work is left to qualified people: see worksafe.govt.nz.
If the fault began immediately after a firmware update, especially a heatbed temperature reading fault, note the installed version and tell us. A rollback is only worth considering where it is available for your model and supported by a known firmware issue or Bambu Lab support guidance, so we will check that with you before changing anything.
Likely causes, and how confident we are
Observed symptoms narrow the bench investigation, but no internal part is confirmed until it is tested.
These are patterns from cases we have handled. A pattern is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Until a part has been tested or replaced and the fault has gone, the cause is not confirmed, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What actually fixes these faults
Once we have identified the fault, repairs we commonly carry out include replacing the AC board, the power supply, the mainboard, the toolhead board set, or the heatbed module.
For most kinds of fault we are happy to post a part with the official guide if you are comfortable fitting it. Power faults are the exception. Our preference is that the machine comes back to our Auckland workshop so it can be tested properly on the bench, because guessing at parts on a mains circuit is both expensive and unsafe. We can help arrange collection, and we will send you the return form and packing instructions.
Packing a printer for return
- Use a sturdy box with at least five centimetres of bubble wrap or packing paper on all six sides.
- Remove filament, and make sure nothing is loose inside that could move and break glass or the screen.
- Fill any voids so the machine cannot shift in transit.
Where we draw the safety line
Please do not do any of the following, no matter what a forum suggests.
- No work on mains wiring, the power inlet, the switch, the fuse holder, the power supply or the AC board.
- No measuring voltages, no multimeter work inside the machine.
- No removing or swapping circuit boards to see what happens.
- No unplugging heaters, fans or motors one at a time to hunt for a short. That is a bench procedure for a technician.
- No disabling, bridging or working around a thermal cut out, sensor or other safety feature to get a print finished.
- Never connect or disconnect a toolhead, hotend or any other component while the printer is powered on. Switch off and unplug first. Doing this live has destroyed control boards.
- Do not keep using a machine that has tripped a circuit breaker or an RCD, or that has shown uncontrolled bed heating. Unplug it and contact us.
If a step you have read about anywhere involves any of the above, that is your signal to unplug the machine and contact us instead.
We handle warranty and out-of-warranty repairs case by case, and we will tell you clearly which one applies to your machine and what the options are before any work happens. We do not swap boards pre-emptively without a proven fault, and we will not quote a repair before we know what is wrong.
Preventing power faults
- Always power off and unplug before connecting or disconnecting anything, especially the toolhead or hotend.
- Plug into a good quality wall socket with a sound cable, and avoid long daisy-chained multi-boards. Bed heating is the heaviest load the machine draws.
- Keep the machine on a hard, non-flammable surface with room around it for airflow, not on carpet or paper.
- Keep the printer firmware on a version you have tested. Read the release notes before updating, choose a suitable time to validate the change, and record the previous and new versions.
- Do not leave long prints unattended on a machine that has already shown a power fault.
What to send us
- Model and roughly when and where you bought it.
- Exactly what the machine does when you switch it on, in your own words.
- The state of the rear switch light: on, off or flickering.
- Any error or code on screen, or a photo of it.
- Results of the cable swap, socket swap and power cycle.
- Whether it failed mid-print, at start-up, or while idle, and whether it is intermittent.
- For bed faults, the temperature the screen showed and what it should have been.
- Photos of the underside and rear of the machine, and of any discolouration, melting or damaged component.
- Whether anything was connected or disconnected recently, and whether the fault followed a firmware update.
- The log file if we ask for it, which we can walk you through.
