Good news for anyone who's been sitting on the fence about getting a laser cutter - the FLUX Beambox II 55W is back in stock at our NZ warehouse and ready to ship.
We get asked a lot "what do people actually use these for?" And the honest answer is: heaps of stuff. It's one of those machines where you buy it for one project and then can't stop finding new uses for it.
What are people actually making?
Small business owners are using them to cut custom acrylic signage and personalised gifts. Schools have them running in makerspaces where students are designing and cutting their own projects. Woodworkers are adding engraved details they couldn't do by hand. We had one customer who bought theirs specifically to cut leather panels for bags - started as a side project and turned into a proper little business.
The laser cutter thing gets easier to understand once you see what comes out the other end. A piece of untreated timber goes in, a beautifully engraved keepsake comes out. A sheet of coloured acrylic turns into a perfectly cut custom nameplate. It's satisfying in a way that's hard to explain until you've done it.
The specs that matter
The Beambox II runs a 55W CO2 laser - that's enough grunt to cut through 20mm acrylic and 18mm timber. The work area is 600 x 375mm, which is pretty generous for a desktop machine. Engraving tops out at 900mm/s, so even detailed work doesn't take forever.
The bit that makes everyday use much less fiddly: it has a built-in HD camera and autofocus. You place your material, tap autofocus (done in 2-3 seconds), preview exactly where your design will land, and then run it. No more manually adjusting Z height, no guessing if your design is aligned. When you're working with a piece of timber or leather that you can't easily replace if you get it wrong, that preview function alone is worth it.
It connects to Beam Studio (FLUX's own software) and also works with LightBurn if you're already across that. Both are solid options depending on what you're doing.
